Unique Boutique: Unique, Friendly, Intimate
Event Solutions Magazine, May 2005

Hearing you look old isn't a compliment-- unless you're the O.Henry Hotel. "We used a part of the city's history to design our building," says Director of Sales Martha Bryant. "But really, people do often walk through the door and say, "So when did you remodel this building?" It's welcome commentary for the 7-year-old hotel.

Located in Greensboro, NC, the O.Henry aims to create a cozy atmosphere while catering to guests' every need. As Bryant describes the feel of the hotel, "It's all woods and mohair fabric, leathers-- all those kinds of things make one feel as though they're at home." With its stately appearance and 131 guest rooms, the hotel is certainly more than a home away from home, however. "The brick building and the facade give it that kind of feel that it's a big, expansive building," says Bryant. "But once you get inside, it's warm and cozy and really, pretty simple in its decor."

The O.Henry also houses four meeting rooms, each one inspired by local historical figures. Named for a Greensboro forefather and well-known educator, the Caldwell Room is the largest banquet space, accommodating up to 175 people, and can be divided in six different configurations. The Hawkins Brown Room, named after a woman who founded a finishing school for African Americans in the early 1900s, opens onto an English wall garden. A local artist has been commissioned to paint murals of Greensboro venues on its walls. With three sides of glass, orangery-style Pavilion opens onto a Cloister Garden. With seating for 14 people, the Merchants and Manufacturers Room is the most intimate meeting room by far, and best accommodates smaller board meetings and meals. The rooms are equipped with high-speed Internet, and the hotel accommodates A/V needs.

Its small size is a point of pride for the O.Henry. Meeting and event groups receive personalized attention, according to Bryant. "They get all of our attention--one hundred percent. And you don't find that in one of the corporate, standard, brand-name hotels," she says. "We can make everybody a VIP, because we have the ability to do it."

Perhaps there is a place in history for the little guy. "It really looks like we've been here for a hundred years," she says. "And we want to be here for another hundred."
